Noel Howell is an Antiguan filmmaker, producer, educator, and medical doctor whose work hasplayed an important role in the development of the film industry in Antigua and Barbuda.

 

As thefounder of the Antigua Film Academy, Dr. Howell has dedicated much of his career to creatingopportunities for young people to learn the art and business of filmmaking while developing theircreative voices and technical skills.A trained pediatrician who later expanded into film production and directing, Dr. Howellsuccessfully merged his passion for storytelling, youth development, and Caribbean culture intoa platform designed to nurture the next generation of filmmakers.

 

Through the Antigua FilmAcademy, students are introduced to screenwriting, directing, cinematography, editing, acting,and film production, while also gaining real-world experience through the creation of short films,documentaries, and feature productions. Under his leadership, the Antigua Film Academy has become recognized as one of the region’smost hands-on youth film programs, emphasizing practical training and completed productionsrather than theory alone.

 

Students of the academy have written, filmed, and edited their ownprojects, with several productions receiving screenings and recognition at international filmfestivals. One notable student production, “Nobody Hit Me Pickney,” premiered at theCommffest Film Festival in Toronto, Canada, highlighting the academy’s commitment toshowcasing Caribbean youth talent on the international stage. Dr. Howell has consistently advocated for the growth of indigenous Caribbean filmmaking andthe importance of creating authentic stories rooted in Caribbean culture and experiences. Hisefforts have helped inspire young creatives in Antigua and Barbuda to pursue careers in media,storytelling, acting, and film production. Beyond filmmaking, his mentorship programs oftenencourage discipline, teamwork, literacy, and personal development among young participants.

 

As a filmmaker, Dr. Howell has directed and produced several Caribbean-based productions, including the award-winning film Redemption of Paradise, which received recognition at the Jamaica International Reggae Film Festival. His contributions to regional cinema and film education also led to his appointment as Film Ambassador by the Motion Picture Association of Antigua and Barbuda. Through the Antigua Film Academy and his continued mentorship of young creatives, Dr. Noel Howell remains committed to building a stronger Caribbean film industry while empowering the next generation of storytellers to share their voices with the world.
